Maria Filali and Sigrid Van Tilbeurgh

After each having more than 20 years professional career in tango, life offered Sigrid and Maria the opportunity to transform their friendship and respect for each other into DUO, to continue to seek excellence side by side, enrich themselves and challenge each other pedagogically and artistically.

Over the years, they have both evolved into the ‘classic’ male/female configuration, through which they entered the tango and did not question a priori. Their many experiences of past collaborations (sometimes even with the same partners) have naturally shown them that what takes precedence is content, philosophy, vision, sensitivity, mutual respect and curiosity… certainly not gender.

What connects them deeply and makes their approach so special is a somatic approach to movement and body in space. In doing so, they push their research and transmissions into the connection between the tango structure with emotion and musicality. They therefore offer a very personal approach to the study of tango and give a fascinating insight into a very coherent and specific dance, as well as being completely universal and contemporary.

Over the years, thanks to their solid background as academically trained dancers, they have individually specialised in the transmission of the ‘invisible that changes everything’. Today, this is their natural place as professors and dancers on the international tango scene. Maria and Sigrid, being endless students themselves, have both taken advantage of the imposed stoppage of recent years to deepen their personal study of the body and movement. Their teaching is thus newly enriched by the study of BODY MIND CENTERING (Sigrid), Gyrokinsis and GyROTONIC (Maria).

Approach and methodology

Their teaching is both fun and concentrated, as well as extremely accurate. It aims to provide tango dancers with a deep and joyful experience of the body in space, from a cellular and biomechanical approach to an energetic and poetic perspective. Their purpose is to help people question themselves, discover concepts or change perspectives on things they have been able to do for years, to give meaning and depth to their dance and to help them grow.

In their classes, Sigrid and Maria offer numerous explorations and proprioceptive experiments around basic concepts, to increase the sensitivity and understanding of the dancer in the tango structure as well as the internal rules of the moving body.

Double Role

They focus on what the two roles have in common, rather than opposing them. They also link the concepts studied to the idea of connection and improvisation, the foundations of the dance. They address more personal issues, touching on the emotional and psychological dimension of both roles.

All this leads them to constantly alternate individual work and work with a partner. In this context, the evolution of roles is naturally a great key to feeling all the dimensions involved.

Saturday 10:45-12:00
M&S2 An Internal and Sensitive Vision of the Role of the Woman / Follower

Saturday 12:15-13:30
M&S3 Wonderful and Organic Ganchos FULL
Ouch, Ouch…! One terrible gancho and the whole tanda is very compromised! (We all know that feeling, right?) From the study of individual movement, we will explore the rules of alignment in structure as well as the leading of organic and musical ganchos.

Saturday 15:30-16:45
M&S4 The Sensorial Relationship Between Feet and Hands in Tango
Tango is a deeply organic dance in which the whole body is involved: in this class, we will explore in particular the fundamental notions of contraction and expansion in the abrazo and will highlight the essential role of the hands (and more broadly of the points of contact of the upper body) in connection with the quality of the feet in terms of grounding and quality of walk.

Sunday 12:45-14:00
M&S5 Towards the Milonguero
There are monuments that you must have seen in your life. The Acropolis, the Pyramids, Angkor Wat… La salida cuarenta is an historical monument in tango. Through this you will learn how to change the distance in the embrace, as well as the density and the weight, to vary in the expression of the dance and the resulting emotion.

Sunday 14:30-15:45
M&S6 Tonicity and Musicality
(For all levels, individual technique)
To be able to play with music while dancing, you have to know how to transform your body. How the imagination can be a magic door to personal expression in the tango!
